Can a power steering pump be drawing power from the battery if the pump itself is bad? Can a power steering pump be drawing power from the battery if the pump itself is bad? I have a 1999 saturn sl2 dohc manual transmission. Replaced alternator, starter, and battery. The problem is that the battery still isn't putting out over 14 v. It is at 12.4volts or so. So I was thinking it could be the power steering pump? There is also a whining noise coming from it. Could it be a bad bearing from the pulley on the pump? Should I just replace the pump? Is there anything else that could be drawing power from it? All the wiring looks good I do not think it is losing ground or anything. car insurance. Auto parts : > Terminal Block Mitsubishi 2007. Yugo . How to Change the Oil Pan Gasket on a Chrysler LeBaronChanging the oil pan gasket in the Chrysler LeBaron is relatively easy as far as access goes. The oil pan is under the motor, and there is nothing that will get in the way while you remove the oil pan to access the gasket. The oil pan gasket is the source for most major oil leaks, as this portion of the car sits close to the ground and is susceptible to road debris. You can change out the oil pan gasket during your routine oil change. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Crescent wrench Drain pan Oil filter wrench Socket wrench Socket set Rubber mallet Razor knife New oil pan gasket RTV Black Silicone (optional) New oil filter 5 qt. motor oilRemoving the Gasket Step by Step : 1 Locate the oil pan underneath the motor of your Chrysler LeBaron. At the bottom of the oil pan you'll see a drain plug. 2 Unscrew the drain plug with a crescent wrench. Ensure you have a pan to catch the oil draining out. When the oil has drained completely, tighten the drain plug back to the oil pan. 3 Unscrew the oil filter with an oil filter wrench. Always change the oil filter when changing the oil. 4 Locate and unscrew all the bolts holding the oil pan to the motor, using a socket wrench. There will be 10 to 12 bolts. 5 Pull the oil pan down. If the oil pan is stubborn, tap it with a rubber mallet to loosen the seal. 6 Clean the old gasket material off the pan with a razor knife or a putty knife. Scrap any old gasket material off the bottom of the motor as well. Replacing the Gasket Step by Step : 1 Place the new gasket around the edge of the oil pan. Match up all the holes in the gasket with the bolt holes on the oil pan. There is only one correct way to position the gasket on the pan. You can add RTV silicone to the gasket to ensure it stays in position; run a small bead of silicone around the oil pan and lay the gasket over the bead. 2 Place the oil pan to the motor and start a bolt on each side. Do not tighten until all the bolts are installed. 3 Start all the bolts to secure the pan in place. Tighten each bolt with the socket wrench. 4 Lubricate the gasket around the oil filter by dabbing your finger in the old engine oil and rubbing that oil around the gasket. This will help preserve the gasket seal and make the filter easier to remove when the next oil change is due. 5 Apply the oil filter to the oil filter housing. Tighten the filter by hand; do not wrench-tighten. Adding Engine Oil Step by Step : 1 Open the hood to access the engine compartment. Twist off the oil cap to pour in fresh oil. 2 Pour four quarts of fresh motor oil to the crankcase. Check the level of the oil. Then pour the oil in half-quart increments until the dipstick indicates the oil level is full. Always allow two to four minutes after pouring to give the oil time to fall to the drain pan. 3 Start the LeBaron and let it run for five minutes. This will circulate the oil and fill the oil filter. 4 Turn the car off and check the motor oil. Add more if necessary. 5 Close the hood. Tips & Warnings Depending on the year of your LeBaron, you may need to raise the car up to have room to work underneath the vehicle. Use caution when raising the vehicle. Set the parking brake and chock the wheels to prevent the car from moving. Ensure you are working on flat ground. Consult your owner's manual or a dealer for the correct type of motor oil to run in the vehicle. The year and motor type will determine the correct motor oil. Contact a parts store or recycling center for disposal of the old motor oil. Do not overfill the crankcase with oil. Overfilling the oil can cause engine failure.
Yugo . How to Replace the Oil Pan Gasket With RTV in a SubaruReplacing the oil pan on your Subaru may be necessary if it has been damaged from running over a large object, causing it to get dented severely. The oil pan houses the oil for the engine and will not function properly if dented, because the oil pick-up is housed at the bottom of the pan, which distributes oil to all areas of the engine. To ensure that your engine has sufficient oil for lubrication and cooling, replace your oil pan as soon as you see any signs of damage to it. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Jack Jack stands Ratchet Sockets Oil drain pan Replacement oil pan RTV Engine oil Step by Step : 1 Jack up the Subaru and place on jack stands. 2 Place an oil drain pan below the oil pan. 3 Remove the drain bolt from the oil pan with a ratchet and allow the oil to drain into the drain pan. 4 Remove the exhaust from the exhaust manifold and the catalytic converter. It will be held on at both ends with two bolts that can be removed with a ratchet. 5 Remove the cross-member from the subframe by removing the bolts holding it at each end with a ratchet. 6 Remove the bolts holding the oil pan to the engine block with a ratchet. Use an extension attached to the ratchet to facilitate removal. 7 Remove any residual silicone gasket material (RTV) that has stuck onto the engine block with a razor or sandpaper. 8 Place RTV all along the perimeter of the new oil pan where it meets the engine block. 9 Push the oil pan against the engine block and thread in the bolts with a ratchet. Step by Step : 10 Reinstall the cross-member with a ratchet. Step by Step : 11 Reinstall the exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold and catalytic converter. Step by Step : 12 Add 4 quarts of engine oil to the crankcase. Step by Step : 13 Jack up the car high enough to remove the jack stands and lower the car. Tips & Warnings If you try to remove the RTV off of the engine block with a razor blade, take care not to damage the engine block by scratching the surface because that will cause a leak between the oil pan and engine. Wear safety glasses when working on your Subaru. *move into lower gears in certain circumstances. But instead of a manual clutch, an automatic transmission uses a torque converter and hydraulic pressure to change gears automatically. The torque converter replaces the standard transmission's clutch. The torque converter is a fluid coupling that transfers power from the engine to the transmission input shaft. It allows for smooth transfer of power and at highway speeds can be locked up to reduce slippage and improve fuel economy. Shifting in an automatic transmission is controlled by either a hydraulic system or an electronic system. Hydraulically controlled transmissions con sist of an intricate network of valves and other components along with hydraulic pressure to control the operation of planetary gearsets (see Figure 9-6). These gearsets can be fashioned to generate three, four, or five forward speeds. 421

As the engine speed changes, the pump that pumps the transmission fluid to develop hydraulic pressure also changes speed. The transmission fluid responds to the changes in pressure by flowing through the transmission at different rates. When the car is moving slowly, the pressure is low, and only the low gears respond. In Drive, as the car's speed increases, so does the pressure, and higher gears are brought into play. The hydraulic pressure drives the transmission gears by means of friction bands and plates. These bands and plates do the same thing that the clutch on a manual transmission does — they pull various gears into and out of action. When mechanics tell you that your bands need adjusting, these are the bands they're talking about. They can usually make this adjustment without taking the transmission apart.
